Current Vaccine Recomendations

2012 WHO Southern Hemisphere recommendations
It is recommended that vaccines for use in the 2012 influenza season (southern hemisphere winter) contain the following:

  •  an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
  •  an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;*
  •  a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.
* A/Wisconsin/15/2009 and A/Victoria/210/2009 are A/Perth/16/2009-like viruses.

2011-2012 WHO Northern Hemisphere recommendations
It is recommended that the following viruses be used for influenza vaccines in the 2011-2012 influenza season (northern hemisphere):

  •   an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
  •   an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;*
  •   a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) decision on the Influenza vaccine virus composition for Australia 2012
The AIVC met on 5 October 2011 and decided that the Australian influenza vaccine for 2012 should contain the following:

  • A (H1N1): an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose
  • A (H3N2): an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose
  • B: a B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose
